New 'Call of Duty' game, social network to debut this year - CNN.com

Activision Blizzard plans to release a new "Call of Duty" game this year
It will include a new social-network platform that's been in the works for two years
"Call of Duty" is one of Activision's two "significant investments"

(CNN) -- Activision Blizzard is set to launch a new "Call of Duty" game for consoles alongside an ambitious digital platform later this year, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said on the company's earnings call Monday.

Executives have expressed an especially keen excitement about the new platform features.

They named "Call of Duty" as one of the two "significant investments" that Activision is making, which will include the company's largest marketing campaign, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said on the call. (The other investment is in PC developer Blizzard, which is working on "Diablo III" and a new massively multiplayer online game franchise unrelated to "World of Warcraft.")

"This year's 'Call of Duty' initiatives will result in the best 'Call of Duty' experiences we have created to date," Kotick said. In addition to paid features integrated into the platform, "You will see a lot of new services and capabilities that will be provided free of charge to all of our customers, fake oakleys sunglasses," he said.

The "Call of Duty" online service has been in development for two years under the name Project Beachhead, Hirshberg said. The company created a separate group, also called Beachhead, to focus full attention on the project, Kotick has said previously.

Activision will begin briefing reporters in San Francisco later this week about the project under nondisclosure agreements. The company plans to make a formal announcement in the next several weeks, Kotick said. Still more details are expected in June for the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

That a new entry in the "Call of Duty" series will be released this year isn't a bombshell. Activision has introduced a new game in that franchise each year since 2005. The most recent, "Call of Duty: Black Ops,fake oakleys," was the top-selling game in the United States and Europe over the last three months.

"Black Ops" still draws fervent crowds for its multiplayer features and continues to sell well.

But that experience has been hampered by Sony Computer Entertainment's shutdown of the PlayStation Network, with the online gaming service approaching three weeks of downtime this week. Activision intends to release a download package for "Black Ops" in the next three months. "Hopefully the situation will be resolved by then,Wholesale Replica Handbags," Hirshberg said.

Cliff Bleszinski, the design director for Epic Games, which makes another popular shooting franchise called "Gears of War," said he has doubts about "Call of Duty's" viability. "'Call of Duty' is doing well right now, oakley glasses, but if I was one of the owners of that property, I'd be concerned about potential fatigue," he said in a recent interview.

This year's new installment may be called "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" and debut in November, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. "The game has exceeded every internal milestone," Hirshberg said on Monday's call.

[info]ggdsds7306

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver announced Monday that they are "amicably separating," but there was no mention of divorce in their joint statement.

Confirmation of their split came just two weeks after the 25th anniversary of their marriage and four months after Schwarzenegger left the California governor's office.

"This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us," their statement said. "After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion, and prayer, oakley glasses, we came to this decision together."

The statement did not reveal when the separation began, but Shriver, 55, was not wearing her wedding band in a video posted on YouTube two weeks ago.

"At this time, we are living apart,Wholesale Replica Handbags, while we work on the future of our relationship," they said.

The marriage of Schwarzenegger, a bodybuilder-turned-actor,fake oakleys sunglasses, and Shriver, the niece of President John F. Kennedy, fake oakleys, was considered an unlikely union, especially considering Shriver's deep Democratic roots and Schwarzenegger's Republican leanings.

They became one of America's most famous couples. He was one of Hollywood's highest paid actors and she was a network news anchor. They both gave up those careers when he was elected governor of California in 2003, a job he held until this past January.

Justice Department investigates Newark Police - CNN.com
[info]ggdsds7306

(CNN) -- The Newark Police Department is being investigated by the federal government in the wake of allegations of discriminatory policing by department officers, according to Paul Fishman, oakley glasses, the U.S. Attorney for the district of New Jersey.

The inquiry will evaluate whether the Police Department's practices are in violation of federal law, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Officials have begun conducting interviews and reviewing records to determine whether officers have a pattern of illegal stops and frisks and use of excessive force against civilians.

"Our goal is not to blame, but to fix any problems we might find," Fishman said at a news conference Monday.

The investigation is being led by the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey as well as the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division, which has conducted similar reviews of law enforcement agencies in New York, Ohio, Washington, Pennsylvania, fake oakleys, the District of Columbia, Louisiana and California.

Officials will also focus on allegations that Newark police officers retaliate against people who attempt to watch or record police activity,Wholesale Replica Handbags, according to a Justice Department statement.

Although officials would not pinpoint where allegations against the Newark Police Department originated, Fishman said they took into consideration a petition filed by the American Civil Liberties Union in 2010.

The ACLU of New Jersey allegedly found more than 400 civil rights violations within Newark public records dated January 1, 2008, through July 1, 2010. These violations, fake oakleys sunglasses, detailed in a petition it sent to the Justice Department in September, include false arrests and violent behavior by officers that resulted in injury and death.

"The announcement that the DOJ will bring its resources and expertise to our city and hold the NPD accountable marks a critical moment in our city's history," said ACLU-NJ Executive Director Deborah Jacobs in a statement. "The cries of Newarkers have finally been heard."

Newark Mayor Cory Booker said that Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy reached out directly to Justice Department officials for help after these allegations arose last year.

"We have to engender greater respect from the citizenry and confidence that the Police Department is out there working with them," Booker said.

The investigation is not a criminal investigation and is meant to pinpoint practices that violate the Constitution and provide a way to fix them, said Tom Perez, assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department.

"We are here to listen and learn -- to follow the facts where they take us," Perez said.

The public can submit complaints about the Newark Police Department through a hot line and online. The number is 855-281-3339, and the website for a complaint form is www.justice.gov/usao/nj/files/CivilRightsComplaint.pdf

13 killed in clash on Mexico-U.S. border lake - CNN.com
[info]ggdsds7306

(CNN) -- Twelve suspected members of the Zetas drug gang and a member of Mexico's Navy were killed in a shootout on an island in a lake that straddles the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said Monday.

The Mexican Navy said the shootout occurred Sunday on Falcon Lake, located between Texas and the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, after troops patrolling the area spotted a camping area on an island.

The suspected drug traffickers used the island for storing marijuana to be transported by boat to the United States, the Navy said in a statement.

After the shootout, the Navy said it seized guns, ammunition and bullet-proof vests from the island.

Falcon Lake drew the attention of law enforcement authorities on both side of the border last September after an American man on a personal watercraft was reportedly ambushed by attackers and shot in the head.

2010: 'He took a bullet for me,oakley glasses,' Falcon Lake victim's wife says

Tiffany Hartley told police that she and her husband were riding water scooters on the lake on September 30 when they were attacked.

"It didn't happen in the United States, fake oakleys," said Zapata County, Texas, Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez.

Navy plan to allow same-sex marriage on bases draws opposition - CNN.com
[info]ggdsds7306

Washington (CNN) -- A preliminary U.S. Navy plan to allow its chaplains to perform same-sex marriages in military chapels after the end of "don't ask, don't tell" has fired up congressional opposition.

All services are moving forward with the transition from the present ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in uniform. Top Pentagon officials are expected to sign off on the new rules and the progress of training in coming weeks.

An April 13 memo from the Navy officer in charge of chaplains says they "may" officiate at same-sex marriages or civil unions, depending on both local laws and their religious organization.

It is not clear if the other services would have a similar provision.

"Regarding the use of base facilities for same-sex marriages, legal counsel has concluded that, generally speaking, base facility use is sexual orientation-neutral," Rear Adm. Mark Tidd, the Navy's chief of chaplains, oakley glasses, said in the memo. "This is a change to previous training that stated same-sex marriages are not authorized on federal property."

After the pending rule change was reported in the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes newspapers, it drew criticism from dozens of members of Congress.

A letter from Rep. Todd Akin, fake oakleys sunglasses, R-Missouri, to the secretary of the Navy asking him to block the change has been signed by 63 members of Congress, according to Akin's website.

Akin says the Navy's permission for gay weddings in military chapels,Wholesale Replica Handbags, once the current policy formally is ended, would violate the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

"While a state may legalize same-sex marriage, federal property and federal employees, like Navy chaplains, should not be used to perform marriages that are not recognized by federal law," Akin said on his website. "My colleagues and I are calling on the secretary of the Navy to make sure that the Navy actually follows the law. As we state in the letter, 'It is not the place of any citizen of this country to pick and choose which laws they are going to obey. We expect citizens sworn to defend those laws to set the example in their application.'"

The Pentagon said in a statement Monday that the Defense of Marriage Act "does not limit the type of religious ceremonies a chaplain may perform in a chapel on a military installation." However, fake oakleys, while the Defense of Marriage Act still stands, the Defense Department would not recognize those unions as valid marriages even if they're performed in a state that recognizes same-sex marriages.

Cmdr. Danny Hernandez, the Navy's assistant chief of information, told CNN that under the same-sex marriage proposal, each chaplain would be bound by his own religious beliefs. "A chaplain can conduct a same-sex ceremony if it is in the tenets of his faith," Hernandez said.

And he said the policy would have no impact on military benefits. When Defense Secretary Robert Gates and others announced that the Pentagon would end the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, they made it clear that benefits for spouses and survivors are a complicated issue that would require more study and planning.

Terror plot against New York synagogue busted - CNN.com
[info]ggdsds7306

New York (CNN) -- Two men suspected of planning an attack on a Manhattan synagogue with guns and a grenade were arrested Wednesday,Designer Handbags, marking the end of a seven-month undercover operation by New York police officers.

The suspects, Ahmed Ferhani and Mohamed Mamdouh, were detained in midtown Manhattan after buying two loaded Browning semi-automatic pistols, one Smith & Wesson revolver,Replica Designer Handbags, ammunition and a grenade,Replica Handbags, according to Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

At least a dozen police officers swarmed Ferhani, who was at the time placing the weapons in the trunk of his car. Mamdouh was arrested on a street nearby moments later.

Each faces terrorism and hate-crime-related charges and, if convicted, could confront the prospect of life behind bars without the possibility of parole.

Ferhani, a 26-year-old unemployed resident of Queens, is a native of Algeria who traveled to the United States in 1995, claiming asylum.

"Muslims are abused all over the world, and I ain't going to take it,cheap oakley sunglasses," prosecutors quoted Ferhani as saying; his conversations with an undercover police officer were secretly recorded.

Prosecutors say Ferhani sold narcotics in an effort to finance the planned attacks.

His defense attorney, Stephen Pokart, told Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Melissa Jackson that his client "hasn't committed any crime at all."

Mamdouh, 20, also a Queens resident, was previously arrested on a pending 2010 burglary charge. He worked for a local delivery service and came to the United States in 1999 with his family from Casablanca, Morocco.

Defense attorney Steven Fusfelda -- while not acknowledging the legitimacy of the charges -- asked for leniency given that the prosecutors' case appeared to hinge more directly on Ferhani, he said.

Both men's voices were captured on audio recordings plotting the attacks, District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said, but they had not selected which synagogue to target.

Neither man has been charged in connection with a terrorist cell. Both, however, were allegedly "committed to violent jihad," telling police that they wanted to kill Jewish people and also hoped to attack New York's Empire State Building, Vance said.

"While Osama bin Laden is dead, terrorism around the world is not," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday.

Such "lone wolves" are "the toughest to stop," the mayor said, noting that 12 other terrorist plots in New York have been thwarted since September 11, 2001.

"We know that, as an international symbol of freedom and liberty, New York City is and will always be a target."

Authorities said the suspects discussed disguising themselves as Jewish temple-goers, growing their beards and pretending to pray as a way to sneak inside a synagogue and place a bomb.

During the course of the police investigation, Ferhani was recorded discussing his goal of financing "the Palestinian cause in Gaza" and traveling to Gaza in an effort to kill Israeli soldiers, according to a district attorney statement.

The suspects offered no resistance during the arrest, and the plot appears to be more aspirational than operational, police said.

They were arraigned Thursday in Manhattan Criminal Court.

"Generally the federal government has a greater interest in prosecuting these matters," said former federal prosecutor Michael Wildes. "Their deferral here begs the question of the posturing and the behind-the-scenes politics that played out."

Wildes called it a "major accomplishment" for the state to try a terrorist suspect, rather than to proceed under federal jurisdiction.

Over the course of the investigation, prosecutors say, Ferhani discussed buying multiple guns while trying to learn how to build a bomb.

He allegedly proposed blowing up an empty synagogue,Cheap Replica Handbags, as well as a church in Queens. Later, Ferhani was recorded discussing ideas of blowing up a synagogue "with Jews or Zionists inside," the statement said.

"The defendants plotted and took concrete steps to bomb synagogues and kill Jewish New Yorkers as an act of terrorism," Vance said.

Meanwhile, U.S. Homeland Security officials continue to stress that lone wolves and homegrown terrorists are high on their list of concerns and can be just as dangerous as those with direct ties to al Qaeda or other extremist groups.

The terror threat "was on the radar screen" well before al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed May 2 in Pakistan, one law enforcement source said.

The arrests grew out of another investigation that also began long before bin Laden's death, officials said.

Jewish Federations of North America President and CEO Jerry Silverman released a statement Thursday saying his group was "disturbed by the news reports of a homegrown terror plot aimed at Jewish communal institutions in New York City."

In the wake of bin Laden's death, he says, the federation is endeavoring to help "communities be prepared, alert and secure against the heightened threat."

High-flying iReporters cover flooding from the air - CNN iReport Blog
[info]ggdsds7306

When a natural disaster causes widespread damage, it's difficult for the mind to comprehend just how much land has been affected.

As waters rise on the Mississippi River, we're seeing iReporters take to the skies to show us what's going on at different spots along the river and gauge the extent of the flooding.

Physician and pilot Stephen Gipson of Memphis, Tennessee, has been perplexed by the waters rushing through parts of town. His aerial images show how water has overflowed the river and rushed into places it shouldn't be. He shot one set of photos on May 5,Replica Handbags, and then sent another on May 9. By then, there was a lot more water to be seen. The photos revealed waterlogged homes, buildings and fields. Gipson says at the airport he took off from,Cheap Replica Handbags, the water table seemed high and he could see water coming up through some cracks in the ground.

We also heard from jairrami, another frequent-flying iReporter who shared images taken from a plane above Memphis. (He asked us not to share his name.) He says he's traveled through the region before and this time, the snaking river reached out much further from its banks.

"I've never really seen that much flowing through that area before," he said.

Further up the river, Tod Policandriotes, a scientist at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, went up with his pilot instructor friend to get a look at the scene below on May 8. As for what awaited him in the sky, Policandriotes says he was amazed at how much water was flowing through the Mississippi River. Upon departing from Carbondale, Illinois,Designer Handbags, he could get a good view of the flooding in Metropolis and the areas where levees were blown near Cairo.

“I saw massive flooding all along the Mississippi on both sides from Grand Tower to just below Cairo,Wholesale Replica Handbags, Illinois, cheap oakley sunglasses, and in through Metropolis. Along the Ohio River, the flooding does not seem to be quite as bad, but it is still flooded in many areas. Where the levees were blown, near Cairo, water is spread as far as I could see on the Missouri side at 2,000 feet altitude.”

These up-high views give you a feel for what this flooding really means. If you've witnessed the Mississippi River flooding for yourself, we want to hear from you. Share your photos and videos with CNN iReport, and tell us your feelings and stories in the comments area below.

BCS fines Fiesta Bowl $1M over campaign contributions - CNN.com
[info]ggdsds7306

(CNN) -- College football's Bowl Championship Series says it will fine the Fiesta Bowl $1 million and impose other sanctions after the bowl reported that it had, among other things, reimbursed employees for political contributions they made allegedly at bowl leaders' encouragement.

The Fiesta Bowl can remain a part of the BCS, a system that determines the national college football champion, if it adheres to all sanctions,Designer Handbags, the BCS said Wednesday.

Had the Fiesta Bowl not implemented its own reforms when it self-reported in March, BCS investigators "almost certainly would have recommended the termination of the BCS Group's involvement with the Fiesta Bowl," a BCS report said.

Although the BCS looks intent on keeping the Fiesta Bowl, the NCAA has yet to decide whether it will continue to license the game.

"The NCAA postseason bowl licensing subcommittee will review the (BCS) report as it considers whether to reaffirm the Fiesta Bowl and Insight Bowl licenses for the coming season," NCAA Vice President of Communications Bob Williams said Wednesday.

The Fiesta Bowl operates not only its own January bowl game in Glendale, Arizona, but also the Tempe-based Insight Bowl and -- once every four years -- the BCS National Championship Game. The Fiesta Bowl's organizers operated January's BCS title game, in which Auburn defeated Oregon 22-19 in Glendale.

The Fiesta Bowl in March fired its president/CEO and released a 276-page internal report saying the bowl had made allegedly illegal reimbursements to employees who had made political contributions to certain candidates for local, state and federal office.

In the report, employees and former employees said their bosses encouraged the political donations and indicated they would be repaid. The report revealed the bowl reimbursed at least $46,Wholesale Replica Handbags,539 since 2000 to at least 21 people,Replica Designer Handbags, including current or former employees, cheap oakley sunglasses, their spouses and one volunteer.

The nonprofit Fiesta Bowl's report also detailed what the bowl called unauthorized and excessive employee compensation and inappropriate spending.

Besides firing CEO John Junker, the bowl's board of directors said in March it would hire a chief compliance officer to oversee regulatory matters, review compensation to senior staff, and establish a whistleblower hot line that would be monitored by an independent company.

In its report Wednesday, a BCS task force that examined the bowl's report lauded the reforms, but added that the sanctions and additional reforms were needed.

"The evidence strongly suggests that the bowl's executive staff frequently acted with scant regard for ethics and proper conduct," the report said.

The BCS said it intends to direct the bowl to pay the $1 million to charities that benefit Arizona's youths.

Besides the fine, the BCS said the bowl should remove board members who are found to have acted inappropriately, have at least two board members who have a collegiate administration or faculty background and submit to independent internal-control audits and more extensive financial audits.

"The Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors understands and accepts the sanctions imposed by the BCS," Fiesta Bowl Board Chairman Duane Woods said in a statement released Wednesday. "We think that these tough but fair measures are consistent with our commitment to reform the Fiesta Bowl's governance and rebuild trust."

A 2009 Arizona Republic report in which bowl employees alleged they were reimbursed for campaign contributions triggered a state investigation that eventually was referred to the state attorney general's office, which has yet to release a finding.

The bowl's first internal investigation,Replica Handbags, launched days after the Republic's report, was said to have found no credible evidence to support the allegations. But a second internal investigation began last fall after an employee came forward with information about alleged misconduct; that second probe led to March's report.

The BCS is administered by the 11 athletic conferences of the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision and the University of Notre Dame.

Immigration reform taking center stage in Texas - CNN.com
[info]ggdsds7306

Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama heads to El Paso, Texas, on Tuesday to give a speech on the need for comprehensive immigration reform -- a perennial hot-button political issue that both Democrats and Republicans hope to use to their advantage in 2012.

Obama has held a series of meetings with key Latino officials and reform advocates in recent weeks. Despite an aggressive push for substantive policy changes from his political base, the president recently indicated he has ruled out acting on his own to implement provisions of a reform bill that failed to win congressional approval last year.

Nevertheless, fake oakleys sunglasses, immigration reform "remains a priority" for the administration,Wholesale Replica Handbags, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday. There has been bipartisan support for reform in the past, Carney noted, fake oakleys, and "we think we can build support for it again in the future."

The issue requires "focus," "education," and "persistence," Carney said. "The sooner it gets done, the better for the country."

Carney said the president's speech is likely to highlight border security improvements and the economic costs stemming from a failure to change course. And senior administration officials said the speech will kick off a campaign-style effort to rally support for an overhaul and "to elevate the debate," as one put it.

"The president is leaning in and asking others to lean in with him in order to create the environment that spurs congressional action," said the official, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity. Obama wants to create "a sense of urgency around the country that matches his sense of urgency," the official said.

El Paso Mayor John Cook told CNN Tuesday he hopes the president will use the speech to make a strong push for more agents at border crossing points.

Obama has "already done a lot of work" to put "additional boots on the ground" along the border, Cook said. But the number of customs agents near El Paso has remained the same since 2005 while the overall volume of trade with Mexico has risen substantially, he noted.

In terms of more extensive immigration reform, Cook said there "doesn't have to be a pathway to citizenship." There should, however, be at least "a pathway to legalization."

Let's "get these folks -- (roughly) 12 million people -- out of the shadows," he said. "Get them to come out and have their place in the United States be legal."

Republican leaders have indicated an unwillingness to consider broader changes -- including a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants -- until the Mexican border is brought under tighter control. But another administration official who took part in Monday afternoon's briefing said border controls have been tightened up, and, "It's time now to begin taking up the immigration reform issue as well."

"We are not going to resolve this issue with border enforcement alone," the official said.

Conservative frustration has boiled over in recent months in form of a rash of state-level proposals to apprehend and deport illegal immigrants. Key parts of an Arizona law requiring police officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other statutes were recently blocked by the federal courts.

The Justice Department sued Arizona, arguing that only the federal government has the authority to dictate immigration policy. Federal district and appellate judges have blocked that provision, and the state asked the U.S. Supreme Court to take the case Monday.

Progressive reform advocates, meanwhile, have been frustrated by Congress's inability to pass the DREAM Act, which would offer legal standing to immigrants who entered the United States illegally as children under the age of 16 and have lived in the country for at least five years.

The bill would require, among other things, a high school or General Education Development diploma, two years of college or military service, and criminal background checks.

Advocates say the bill would give legal standing to young people brought to the United States by their parents who have bettered themselves and served their new country.

Republican opponents equate the measure to amnesty, and have said it would signal to the world that the United States is not serious about enforcing its laws or its borders. They have also called the bill unfair to immigrants who, in many cases, waited years to come to the country legally.

The measure was defeated by a Republican filibuster in the Senate last December after winning passage in the House of Representatives. Most analysts believe it has little chance of clearing the GOP-controlled House now.

Regardless, the immigration issue remains politically potent. Obama won several Western states in 2008 -- including Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada -- partly on the rising power of the Latino vote. Democrats believe Hispanic voters might put traditionally Republican Arizona in play next year.

In the long run, Democrats are also hoping to use their advantage among Hispanics to make inroads in core GOP states such as Texas.

Obama won over two-thirds of the nationwide Hispanic vote in 2008. His approval rating among Hispanics hovered around 68 percent during the first three months of this year, according to the most recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation polls.

For their part, Republicans have depended on the immigration issue in the past to fire up conservative voters. Some analysts also believe that if Democrats push too hard, too fast on immigration, particularly in tough economic times, it could push swing voters toward the GOP.
